SELLER NOTES
This beautiful 1962 Chevrolet Corvette convertible was with the last owner since 1978, and spent its time travelling between Illinois and Florida with the rest of the snowbirds. The prior owner passed in 2022, and the car wasn't driven for about a year until I purchased it. Starting in early 2023, a refresh was started on the car, encompassing a new top, new radial tires, and a mechanical freshening by Sir Thomas Performance in Port charlotte, FL which included rebuilding the Carter AFB, dropping and draining the fuel tank, full tune up, plugs, and anything else they saw that needed addressed.
Paint was redone a few years prior, and was an easy job since the car still wore its original, albeit faded finish from 1962, and had no damage or disrepair to contend with. With the chrome and most of the trim removed, it was easy to take it down, block it, spray it in the original Roman Red, and then polish it to perfection. Speaking of chrome, the trim on this car is original, and shows the level of care it was given since new. It is about as nice as you can get without having it redone. It shows light mild patina on the plate frame and lower front marker light surrounds, as well as the rear top latches and rear view mirror, but as you can see in the detailed photos, it’s not that big an issue.
Interior is original, and shows mild wear from time, with the only issues being the door panels where they attach near the front (see all the photos below) and some light patina on the radio/door pulls/gauge surround/rear-view mirror, and some light wear on the carpeting. Outside of that, it looks really good. The center painted panel between the seats shows faded paint, and it's from where the prior owner had a Corvette Club of Chicago metal medallion affixed for about 30 years. Buttons and switchgear all look good, and the radio dials turn/buttons push but it does not turn on.
The original convertible top had a cut in it, and the thread had become dry from being stored in the closed position for most of its life. I elected to replace it with a new one from Robbins, and since we are only about 8 miles from THE convertible top kings at Florisun, we let them install it! THERE IS NO HARDTOP WITH THIS CAR. Soft top only.
The engine is a 327/300hp high performance V8 original to the car. Numbers are as follows:
3782870 -1962 to 1966 327 2-bolt main
PAD STAMP - 2110555 (1962 and last six of the VIN)_
VIN decodes as follows:
2- 1962 model year
08- Corvette series
67- Convertible
S- St Louis assembly plant
110555 - Production sequence
It starts, runs, idles, and performs like a 1962 Corvette. It is NOT a restomod with a modern fuel-injected engine. Sometimes when cold you need to pump the pedal a couple times to get it to catch. Transmission is the optional RPO 685 4-speed manual unit born with the car that shifts cleanly and has that tire-chirping low first gear that everyone loves. Clutch take-up is smooth, with a solid engagement about halfway through the movement as it should be. It is matched to the RPO 203 3.08:1 rear axle giving it an overall low gear of 7.83:1 for those aforementioned quick starts.
I have driven the car about 206 miles since completion, and another 150 or so prior to the refresh. It is a blast, and the brand-new Coker radial white wall's improve handling and tracking SO MUCH over OEM bias-ply tires it is incredible!
Wheel caps were professionally restored, and the red rim was finished when the car was and shows wonderfully. Handling is sure and heavy, and the steering does not have an excessive amount of play. Brakes are solid and sure, and the car does pull a touch to the left under extremely hard braking. In town, under normal driving, it feels fantastic. Speedometer shows to be about 3mph slower than GPS, and I have had the car at 70mph multiple times without any issues.
Chassis is remarkably clean and issue free. NO rust. No undercoating or cover-up spray of any kind, just bare metal. Spare well is solid and issue-free. Everything looks as it should.
This is a real, honest, relatively unmolested example of a 1962 Vette, and that is getting hard to find these days. If you are looking, you owe it to yourself to see it.
